Krakow mounds - tour by car

The uniqueness of Krakow is easily visible in almost every part of the city. One more reason for that is the existence of four spectacular mounds looking like artificial hills. They are also called the local pyramids as some of them were built by the citizens even hundreds years ago. Moreover, the tradition of rising the mounds survived till XX century.

The oldest mound, built between VI and VII century is the Krakus Mound at Krzemionki area. It is 16m high - legends tell it's a grave of the founder of Krakow - the prince Krak.

The Wanda Mound was dedicated to the royal figure- princess Wanda. According to the legends, the Princess Wanda committed a suicide not to betray Poland by marrying the German. The mound is adjacent to the Vistula river bank where she drowned. It may be found next to the Steelworks in Nowa Huta and is 14m high.

The next and probably the most famous one is the Kosciuszki Mound created at the beginning of the XIX century. A bit higher, it towers to 34,1m and can be seen from almost every point in Cracow. The mound is dedicated to the Polish and American hero - Tadeusz Kościuszko who fought for the countrie's independence.

The Pilsudskiego Mound is the youngest one as it was formed in 1936, making up the icon of the newborn, independent and free Poland. It's also the tallest one having 35m height.
