It is the oldest district of Kraków. Its centre is The Main Square (Rynek Główny) , which is the largest medieval town square in Europe. The Main Square is full of bautiful monuments like the famous cloth hall, Sukiennice, the gothic St. Mary's Basilica (Kościół Mariacki) and the 70-metres high Town Hall Tower (Wieża Ratuszowa). The Old Town features also the Florian Gate, the remnant of the defense walls, and the Barbican built in 1498-1499 under the reign of John Albert (Jan Olbracht) as a defense against the possible Turkish attack. According to the experts in the field, until the 18th century the Barbican was an unconquerable fortress.
