Wieliczka is a small poviat town in Lesser Poland Province which has been gradually developing as a mining centre since the 13th century. Today it is a typically tourist town famous for its Salt Mine, unique on a world scale, which receives over a million visitors each year. Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the oldest rock salt mines in the world. It has nine levels, the lowest one reaching the depth of 327 meters, and is over 300 meters long. Having a unique microclimate, Wieliczka Salt Mine is a perfect destination for rehabilitation camps organized in the Weselom Lake Chamber 135 meters underground, beneficial especially for those with the upper respiratory tract diseases.
In 1978 the mine was placed on the UNESCO roster of World Heritage Sites. In 1989 it was added to the UNESCO List of the World Heritage in Danger.
